CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“She had no idea her husband was doing the side gig.” Poppa sat up in the front of the Wagoneer. “GGR513,” Poppa repeated a few times.

“GGR513?” I asked as I pulled out of the parking lot of the funeral home.

“The license of the car Brenda was driving. I made sure I watched for her to come in so you could run the plates.” Poppa was always so quick with all the details. “We need to run the plates and see if there’s any stops.”

“Great point.” I picked up the phone to call Scott, since I didn’t have my usual uniform with my walkie-talkie on it.

“Hey, Sheriff.” Scott was always so professional.

“Can you run some plates for me and let me know if you come up with anything?” I asked him.

“Sure. Go ahead.” I could hear some papers shuffling in the background.

I rattled off the license plate and told him to get back to me when he knew something before we hung up the phone.

“I have no idea. None of it makes sense. There was no employment history in his file Scott had pulled, so I wonder where their income comes from.” I knew the little he was getting from the catering jobs wasn’t enough for two people to live on. “I need to look into his wife. When I mentioned his job, she had a strange look on her face.”

“Are you thinking she killed him?” Poppa took the words right out of my head.

“You and I both know we are to look at the spouse as the first person of interest, but when she wasn’t at the wedding, I really thought it was Bradley.” I knew it was all preliminary stuff, and weeding out suspects took time, but I wasn’t one to dillydally. I liked to get things wrapped up pretty quickly. “Now we know Gary was hit in the head with something before someone did a number on his corpse.”

“It would make sense if he was outside smoking and she was lurking in the darkness. When he was alone, she hit him from behind, grabbed the umbrella, and stabbed him with it.” Poppa’s theory could’ve easily been what had happened.

“And with little cooperation from her, or biding time, I. . .” I sighed and took a right on Broadway so I could go home and let Duke out. “I think I need to watch her for a little bit. Get a feel for what she’s up to.”

“I think you’re right.” Poppa rubbed his hands together in delight. “We are going on a stakeout.”

“I reckon we are.” I looked at him and smiled. “Even though we only get to see each other during these investigations, I do love being with you.”

“What about that boy?” He referred to Finn.

“I love him, Poppa. I do, but. . .” My heart sank, taking my breath away.

“You can’t have us both.” Poppa told me something that made things so much more difficult for me.

“I don’t want to be alone all of my life.” I gripped the wheel.
